  • Develop and incorporate advanced leadership skills into daily practice
  • Applying a systems model, analyze and effectively resolve complex management and supervisory dilemmas at the student's place of work
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in operating a rehabilitation department or business
  • Design model occupational therapy consultation services for the student's area of interest

assistive technology and occupational performance

  • Investigate contemporary applications of technology and strategies to support daily occupation throughout the life span within home, school/workplace, and community contexts
  • Evaluate and prescribe assistive devices, environmental modifications, and architectural design for functional independence, risk and injury reduction, health promotion, leisure and recreation, and mobility and transportation related to the student's interests
  • Explore legislative issues that affect services and funding for technology
  • Access funding and resources for assistive technology needs in the student's daily practice of occupational therapy

neuroscience of human occupation

  • Appraise concepts of occupational science and human occupation
  • Discuss how human brain function supports occupation
  • Investigate neuroscience research related to motor learning and motor control, memory and cognition, and behavior and mental health
  • Integrate contemporary concepts of neuroscience and human occupation into the student's practice of occupational therapy

trends and issues in health care

  • Gain insight into health care system issues that impact the delivery of occupational therapy services
  • Become proficient in not only advocating for clients but also influencing public policy
  • Integrate contextual considerations into the daily practice of occupational therapy
  • Identify and resolve complex ethical conflicts that arise in the student's workplace
  • Explore the practical implications of such contemporary issues as telerehabilitation, complementary and alternative medicine, and public health initiatives related to the student's area of specialty

evidence based practice

  • Apply concepts, strategies, and specific tools to assess practice outcomes and program evaluation related to client evaluation, descriptive analyses, intervention effectiveness, and research synthesis and communication
  • Gain and utilize knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research designs to assess clinical evidence related to the student's area of specialty
  • Develop skills in questioning, interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and integrating clinical evidence for engaging in clinical practice
  • Complete a literature review pertinent to the student's interests, assess the evidence, and apply the findings to clinical practice

professional development


Practical clinical application is most fully realized in the capstone Professional Development Project in the last semester of your program. You select a specialty topic for which to design, conduct and evaluate a learning experience that will enhance your clinical expertise. The program culminates as UF in a Professional Development Seminar where you will meet face-to-face with faculty and classmates to present your work and exchange ideas. You are also invited to stay and attend the University of Florida Commencement and OT Graduation Reception.
  • Design and complete a capstone professional project of the student's choice with a faculty mentor
  • Acquire skills in project identification, development, management, and outcome assessment
  • Develop advanced verbal and written presentation skills
